Drowning girl saved by guest instead of lifeguard ( By Klaris )

A young girl who almost drowned at Marina Bay Sands' infinity pool last Sunday afternoon was saved by a hotel guest who identified himself as a doctor, instead of the MBS lifeguard on duty.

According to an eyewitness, Eric, the lifeguard who was on duty was checking the girl's pulse when a hotel guest stepped forward to perform CPR on the victim. This guest identified himself as a doctor. The drowning girl who was clad in a pink swimsuit looked no older than 10 year old.

Eric continued by saying that the young girl was successfully pulled out from the pool, but the lifeguard who was on duty did not seem to know CPR. However, an MBS spokesperson refuted his claims and said that all MBS lifeguards have a Lifeguarding Certificate and CPR Certificates.

The spokesperson added that MBS has between 3-5 lifeguards on duty during pool operating hours.

WHY I CHOOSE THIS ARTICE?

This article appeal to me because of the title. I was puzzled as to why the hotel guest saved the drowning girl instead of the lifeguard on duty.

IF I WERE IN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION

If i were in control of the situation, i would have done the same way as what the hotel guest did. By reacting fast and perform the CPR on the drowning girl.

QUESTION TO ASK

I want to ask the writer wad happened to the young girl and the lifeguard after this incident.

Heartbreak In Facebook World ( By Klaris )

When Alviss Wong, 22, Malaysian, decided to take his life after his girlfriend break up with him last week, he posted a farewell status on his Facebook page together with a teary photo of himself.

Up to 204 Facebook members "liked" his suicidal status on his Facebook wall, but no one stopped or alerted his family on his sucide intention. Only his sister, Cheyl Wong, 28 reportedly tried to talk him out of suicide. However, Alviss assured her by saying that he was just joking.

Few hours later, his body was found sprawled on a car, fallen from the 14th floor of his apartment building in Cheras, Kualar Lumpur.

This tragic news has been getting alot of media coverage, especially in the chinese press. Everyone was drawn to the attention of it. Ariel, 17, student, believes that many thought that Alviss message in Facebook was a prank and simply "played" along.

For Alviss case, Jacques, a psychologist, believes that the root problem was that he did not feel loved. Even though his family love him deeply, he had a deep belief that no one loved him and so he was not lovable. Thus, any external sign of rejection or break-up trigger him to walk to the path of suicide.

WHY I CHOOSE THIS ARTICLE?

I choose this article because the title attract my attention. Facebook is now a worldwide social newtwork which is quite popular among many people. Thus, when i saw the title "Heartbreak in Facebook World" , i was curious and continue to read on.

IF I WERE IN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION

I would have tried to talk Alviss round, just like what his sister had done. By showing care and concern for him instead of "liking" his status would have been a better idea.

Attention Seekers or A Cry For Help? ( By Klaris )

A chinese woman in her 50s boarded a bus naked near Ubi Avenue was arrested by the police. This had drawn concern as it was the 3rd "nude" arrest case in this month.

The other 2 cases was a naked man in his 20s or 30s arrested after trying to order coffee from a 24hour McDonald Outlet along Queensway. Earlier this month, a heavily tattooed man in his 40s sat naked for hours near an HDB block in Ang Mo Kio. He was later arrested.

In this particular case, the woman was initially dressed in black pants and blouse. She later strip down by the roadside, ignoring the stares of many passer-by. After stripping, she folded her clothes nicely and put them in a plastic bag.

She then walked towards a bus stop and stood few metres away from the shelter. Around 100 people was staring at her, according to an eye-witness, Madam Huay.

When the bus service 22 arrived, she board the bus and sat in the back row. However, the bus did not move off and when she refused to accept a jacket to cover up, passengers were told to sit in front and the woman at the back. Passengers were eventually transferred to a second bus service,22 which arrived later on.

It was only when 2 police officers arrived and made her wear a yellow raincoat before bringing her back to the police station. It was later found out she was mentally unstable.

WHY I CHOOSE THIS ARTICLE?

I choose this article because the title attracts my attention. I was curious and continue to read on. After reading, i was really wondering is it a new "trend" of being naked in the public or is it they wanted to seek "attention".

IF I WERE IN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION

I will handle this situation the same way the bus driver did. To remain calm and handled the passengers in the bus as well as the " naked " woman is quite an exhausting task for the bus driver. I could say that the bus driver really handled this situation well.

QUESTION TO ASK

I wanted to ask the writer what happened after she was sent to police station.

Sudents to Retake Exams After Scripts Go Missing ( By Klaris)

31 Mass communication students from MDIS have been told to retake an exam paper after their original script went missing.

The letter which was sent to the affected students states that no marks would be awarded for the MCQ components on search methodology should students fail to turn up for the re-sit.

These affected students were unhappy with the terms stated. One of the student complained that they do not have enough time to revise as they will given such a 'short notice' to prepare. Another students commented that there were no additional classes held to help them recap the exam topic again.

MDIS did not explain how the exams script were lost. It was generally understood that exam script are usually sent to partner universities via courier.

Why I Choose This Article?

I were browsing through yahoo news when the title " Students To Retake Exams After Scripts Go Missing " caught my attention. It was quite surprised for me as it was the first time that i heard of exam scripts gone missing. What makes it worse was that students could not be graded and they had to re-sit for the particular paper again.

If I Were In Charge Of The Situation

I personally do not agree with how MDIS handled the problem. They did not bother to find out the cause of it and no explanation were given as to why the exam scripts were missing . If i were to be in control of the situation, i would give everyone a explanation as to why the exam scripts could have gone missing.

Questions to Ask

I wanr to ask MDIS did they even bothered to find out why the exam scripts gone missing. In addition, why MDIS never give an explanation to the students as to why their scripts went missing. Finally, the last question i wanted to asked were did MDIS handled the problem effectively.

9 dead in China fireworks accident [By: Rong Hua]

9 people were killed and 9 others injured when a truck loaded with fireworks material hit an electricity pole and blew up in central China. The news agency reported that the deaths increased the number of fireworks related deaths nationwide at least 19 in the past week.
The explosion took place when the truck loaded with 600 boxes of fireworks fuses hit the pole and the sparks from the fallen power cables ignited the fuses and caused the blast. The force of the explosion was so big that it shattered windows and cracked walls in houses hundreds of metres away from the scene.
Police were investigating the cause of the accident while search and rescue teams were using sniffer dogs to look for more possible victims.
The article appeal to me as I was wondering why didn’t precaution taken against delivery of fireworks. I’m so glad that Singapore has banned the usage of fireworks except for important events where precautions were taken to ensure the safety of people. I think other countries should consider banning of fireworks to prevent any accidents relating to firework from happening.
I would like to ask the writing why aren’t the fireworks materials covered so as to prevent the firework from having any contact outside the container of the truck. If the firework materials are covered by the container of the truck, such accidents would not happened.
If I was in charge of this, I would take precaution to prevent such accident from happening as fireworks can be dangerous when it blow up which can cause injuries and even death.

Suicide verdict for widow (Edmund)

Summary
This is one of the most saddest story happened in Singapore. The couple married on the same day but died on the different day.
Computer shop owner, Vernon Leong Jun Wei, 31 fell to his death at the Hilton hotel after his wedding banquet in November last year. Eight months later, Kerin Peh Li Ling, 28, had committed suicide at her flat.
At the coroner inquiry on Monday, the court heard that Peh could not come to terms with widowhood and had written practically daily in the two diaries found in her room of her 'undying love' for him.
She had slit her wrists and drank bleach last December but was rushed to hospital in time.
In the entry dated July 4, she wrote that she did not wish to be left alone for too long without her late husband.
'I do not want to move on like others do,' she had confided in her diary.
The next day, she took her life.

Why I Choose This Article
i choose this article because i had read the previous news saying that the bridegroom had fall to his death and now it is sad to hear that the bride had also commit sucide. I always thought such saddening incident will not happen in real life.

If i were to control the situation
I would send the bride to counselling after hearing that her husband had died. I would also spend time acompany the bride if i were to know the bride.

HDB flats more affordable but still too expensive (By: Faezah)

Buyers feel that properties are now more affordable, thanks to the cooling measures introduced by the Government in August, according to the latest survey by real estate listing portal propertyguru.com.sg.

But most respondents to the survey also felt that more could be done to control prices of Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats. One of the things that came out in terms of the most recent research findings was that people still think that HDB is expensive.

The Ministry of National Development said this week that the effects of the cooling measures would continue to sink in through the next one to two months.

Cash over-valuation premiums for HDB resale units had already slipped to $22,000 last month from $35,000 in October.

The Government appeared to be monitoring the situation closely and more cooling measures could be effected if necessary.According to Urban Redevelopment Authority data, growth in property prices slowed to 2.9 per cent in the third quarter, compared with 5.3 per cent in the previous one.

Analysts believe home prices could rise by 10 per cent next year, led by the luxury segment. But HDB prices would rise at a marginal 5 per cent due to the cooling measures.

The article appeals to me because HDB flats are now expensive due to high standard of living in Singapore.

I have a question to ask, how can we improve our standard of living by not increasing the prices for HDB flats as Singaporeans are struggling with the economy.

If i am in charge, I would ensure that the prices for HDB flats are affordable so that Singaporeans are managed to pay the HDB flats by cash or CPF.
